A Short Guide To Awnings

Home & Garden Blog

Residential awnings aren't quite as popular as they used to be, but there are still many homeowners out there who do realize the importance of having them. If you don't currently have an awning, you may want to get one. If you aren't too familiar with awnings and what purposes they serve, then this short guide can give you more information, which can help you to see the benefits you could enjoy should you decide to get an awning.

What an awning is

An awning is a covering that is attached to the exterior of your home. An awning can be thought of as a supplemental roof — awnings can be a permanent fixture that stays in place all of the time, or it can be a retractable one that you can pull out as you see fit. Awnings can be made of a variety of materials with some examples including cloth, vinyl, aluminum, or even wood.

How awnings benefit your home's exterior

Awnings can be installed in places where you want to have protection from the elements, such as rain, snow, and even direct sunshine. This is why they are often found over front porches or back patios. When you step outside of your home and you have an awning overhead, you won't immediately be drenched in rain or snowed on. Plus, the awning will give you some shade, which will give your eyes a bit of extra time to adjust to the outside sunlight, so you won't find yourself getting nearly blinded as you walk outside after being inside for hours.

Just as how the awnings offer you that protection from the elements, they also help by protecting the things you have outside, like your porch or patio furniture, from getting wet in the rain or from being damaged due to constant exposure to direct sunlight.

How awnings benefit your home's interior

Awnings can also help you in other ways that have more to do with the inside of your home. One major thing they can do is to prevent the sun from beating on your windows, which can be a huge help in regards to keeping your energy costs down during the summer when you are using the air conditioner to cool your home. Also, the awnings cut down on the brightness that comes through the windows which can be overwhelming during the brightest times of the day.

Stepping into Greenhouse Gardening

My name is Michelle Landon. When I was a little girl, I loved helping my mother and grandmother in the garden. My passion for gardening grew, and in my adult years, it became my number one hobby. I have lived in apartments and mastered the art of having container gardens. I now have over an acre of land and can grow just about anything. My dream was to one day have a greenhouse and be able to grow all the flowers my heart desired. Six years ago I got my first small greenhouse and was able to start bringing my gardening dream to fruition. Today I have two greenhouses and working in them is even better than I imagined. I would like to share my greenhouse gardening experiences with you.
